When to Go
The Great Migration is a year-round cycle, but the Mara river crossings — the spectacle most travellers dream of — typically occur between July and October. Wildebeest arrive from the Serengeti in July, build in number through August, and peak crossings often happen in September. October sees the herds begin their return south.
Where to Stay
Position matters. Camps on the Mara Triangle and along the Talek and Mara rivers offer the shortest drives to crossing points. What to Pack
- Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, tan — no bright colours)
- Binoculars (8x42 recommended) and a telephoto lens if you photograph
- Layered clothing — mornings are cold, middays hot
- Sunscreen, hat, and insect repellent
- A good book for midday camp hours — animals rest too
Avoiding the Crowds
The Mara can feel congested during peak crossings. Consider conservancy stays where only camp guests drive, visit during shoulder weeks (late June or early November), or combine the Mara with Samburu or Amboseli for a quieter counterpoint. Hot air balloon safaris offer a spectacular aerial perspective away from ground traffic.
