7 Days on the Kenyan Coast: Diani, Mombasa & Lamu

Kenya's coast is not one destination — it is a tapestry of Swahili civilisation, coral reefs, dhow winds, and spice-scented alleyways stretching from the Tanzanian border to Lamu's ancient archipelago. This seven-day itinerary balances beach restoration with cultural depth.

Day 1–2: Diani Beach

Arrive at Ukunda Airstrip or drive from Mombasa. Check into Diani Blue or a verified beachfront partner. Day one is for recovery — long white sands, a reef snorkel at the Marine Education Centre, and sundowners at a beach bar. Day two, try kitesurfing (Diani is East Africa's kite capital) or a Colobus Conservation walk in the sacred Kaya forests.

Day 3: Mombasa Old Town

Drive north to Mombasa. Wander Fort Jesus (UNESCO), the spice markets of Old Town, and lunch at a Swahili restaurant overlooking the creek. Visit Akamba Handicraft Cooperative for wood carving. Evening return to Diani or stay overnight at a heritage hotel in Mombasa.

Day 4–5: Lamu Archipelago

Fly from Ukunda to Lamu (or ferry from Mokowe). Lamu Old Town is car-free — donkeys and dhows rule the lanes. Book Fatuma's Kitchen for a Swahili cooking masterclass. Explore Shela Beach, the Lamu Museum, and a dhow sunset sail. Day five: Manda Island day trip or deep-sea fishing.

Day 6–7: Watamu or Return

Option A: fly to Watamu for Gede Ruins and turtle watching at Local Ocean Conservation. Option B: slow return via Kilifi creek — paddle boarding, bio-kaya walks, and the famous crab samosas at a creek-side restaurant. Depart from Mombasa International Airport.

  • Best months: December–March (dry, calm seas)
  • Ramadan note: some restaurants adjust hours in Lamu — plan accordingly
  • Dress modestly in Old Town and Lamu — shoulders and knees covered
  • Book dhow trips through verified operators only
